Nick Potter

Nick Potter Art

Here we have a stunning collection of Nick Potter original paintings and signed limited edition prints. Nick Potter was born in Chesterfield in 1959. His artistic talents were first discovered at school and it was here that he was able to sell his first piece of artwork to one of the teachers. He gained an A grade in his Art A level but was encouraged to attend university rather than art college. He studied archaeology at Leicester University and then gained a P.G.C.E before becoming a teacher.

A New Start

His teaching career, however, was not to last for long. He moved to the Leicester countryside which he found inspiring but he wasn't able to pursue his love of art due to the necessity of ensuring that he could provide for his family. He works in sales but found time to visit Cornwall, Scotland and the Lake District where the natural beauty of the landscapes began to reignite his interest for art and particularly landscape painting. The breakup of his marriage and the death of his father then left him needing a new start and he returned to painting.

Experimenting With Media

He moved back to Derbyshire and experimented with different media, eventually discovering the vibrancy of acrylics which he used like watercolours. Nick and his new partner began an enterprise called Altered Images which sold his prints to galleries across Derbyshire. The duo later opened Charisma Gallery in Matlock which showcased Nick's paintings alongside those of other British artists. The gallery gave Nick the impetus to take his own work to the next level and he began exhibiting in galleries across the country and professionally publishing his work.

Nick Potter's Creative Process

Nick now lives in Northumberland and works from his garden studio where he always listens to audio books whilst he paints! He is so used to having these as a soundtrack that he now finds it difficult to paint the originals without them! When creating a new piece he begins by creating a rough composition in a sketchbook before quickly sketching the design to a board or canvas. He decides on a mood colour for the work to unify the painting and then completes the piece in acrylics. He paints swiftly and creates a variety of textures.

British Landscapes & Rich Colours

Nick paints landscapes and coastal scenes. His landscapes are often wild and painted in a deep colour palette. The pieces often exhibit a distinctive glow with fiery colours leaping out against a backdrop of dark skies. The impression is that of the half-light of dawn or dusk. He celebrates the beauty of the Lake District, Scottish Highlands and the Peak District together with the wild coasts of Cornwall, Pembrokeshire and Northumberland.
